Just took it out of its box to adjust a new 0-1" rod for my 445 depth gauge. (Bought the rod directly from Starrett; so easy to do) I used the 581, to ensure there was no chance of bending the rod, as might have happened in a regular vise. The jaws of the 581 are sure to be parallel.
